About: HRH Sultan of Terengganu


HRH Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin 

Tuanku Mizan was born on Jan 22, 1962 at Istana Al-Muktafi in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu Darul Iman.
He is the second of seven siblings. Tengku Mizan was the eldest son and heir to the Yang Di-Pertuan Muda of Terengganu, Tengku Mahmud Sultan Ismail.

Tengku Mizan was appointed as Yang di-Pertuan Muda of Terengganu on 6th November 1979 at the age of 17. His proclamation as the heir apparent was held on 17th March 1981.

He received his early education at Sultan Sulaiman II Primary School and later at Sultan Sulaiman Secondary School, Kuala Terengganu.
He pursued his formal education at the Geelong Grammar School in Melbourne, Australia, from 1980 to 1981.
He attended a military course at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in England in 1983, became an Honorary Lieutenant in 1984 and served in the Royal Cavalry.
He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the US International University-Europe in London (now known as Alliant International University) in 1988.

 Public appointments include state administrative officer at the State Economic Planning Unit (Upen) in Kuala Terengganu in 1988. He was also the assistant district land officer at the Kuala Terengganu District Land Office for two years from 1989 to 1991.
He was married with Tuanku Nur Zahirah on March 28, 1996.


The royal couple were blessed with four children, two princes and two princesses: Tengku Nadhirah Zaharah(1996) , Tengku Muhammad Ismail (1998), Tengku Muhammad Mua’az (2000)  and Tengku Fatimatuz Zahra.(2002)

Following the demise of his father Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah in 1998, Sultan Mizan was installed as Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Terengganu. Sultan Mizan was crowned as the 16th Sultan of Terengganu on 4th March 1999 by Tengku Abdul Malik ibni Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah.


He was appointed Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1999 by the Conference of Rulers within the first year of his reign as Sultan of Terengganu.


Sultan Mizan was re-appointed as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong after Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin was  proclaimed as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Yayasan DiRaja Sultan Mizan was launched July 19, 2005 in conjunction with his 43rd birthday. The foundation aims are to improve and upgrade the socio-economic status, livelihood and wellbeing of the people of Terengganu and Malaysians in general.

Tuanku Mizan was elected as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on 13 December 2006.

He proclaimed his eldest son, Tengku Muhammad Ismail as the Regent of Terengganu due to his proclamation as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The function of the Regent was handed over the Council of Regency as Tengku Muhammad was only 8 years old.

Tuanku Mizan re-proclaimed his son as the Regent in 2010 and the Council of Regency was replaced by the Regent's Representative Council. His tenure as Yang di-Pertuan Agong ended on 12th December 2011.
