Today, 11th December 2013 is the 68th birthday of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj. In conjunction with Tuanku's Birthday, I would like to write about Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was born on 24th December 1945 at Istana Jemaah, Klang as Tengku Idris Shah. He is the eldest son of the 8th Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (by the time Tengku Idris was born, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah was the Raja Muda of Selangor).
He received his early education at Malay Primary School, Kuala Lumpur at the age of nine, before attending St. John Institution until 1959.At the young age of 15, he was proclaimed as the Raja Muda of Selangor, the same year his father became the 8th Sultan of Selangor. He pursued his education at the Hale School in Perth, Australia from 1960 and later he attended Langhurst College in Surrey, United Kingdom from 1964.

In 1968, he married Raja Zarina Raja Tan Sri Zainal. They had two princesses, Tengku Zerafina who was born in 1969 and Tengku Zatashah, born in 1973. His installation as the Raja Muda of Selangor was held in 1970 at Istana Alam Shah when he was 24.

His marriage ended in divorce in January 1986. In December 1988, he was married to Lisa Davis who embraced Islam on 28th November 1988 and she took the name Nurlisa Idris Abdullah. The marriage produced a son, Tengku Amir Shah who was born on 12th December 1990 who is the current Raja Muda of Selangor. The marriage ended in divorce in 1997.
He was appointed as the Regent of Selangor on 24th April 1999 when his father was proclaimed as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Two years after his father was proclaimed as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Salahuddin died in his office on 22nd November 2001. Tengku Idris was proclaimed as the 9th Sultan of Selangor following the demise of his father. His coronation was held at Istana Alam Shah on 8th March 2003 at Istana Alam Shah, Klang.
