Tuanku Abdul Halim was born in 1927 and received his early education in Kedah. He later continued his studies at Wadham College, Oxford. He was appointed as the heir apparent to the Kedah's throne. At the age of 31, he was installed as the Sultan of Kedah after the demise of his father, Sultan Badlishah. His coronation was held in 20th February 1959. He was elected as the Sultan of Kedah by the Conference of Rulers and sworn in as the 5th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1970. His uncle, Tunku Abdul Rahman resigned as the Prime Minister, a day after Tuanku Abdul Halim's installation. His term ended in 1975.
In 2008, he celebrated his golden jubilee as the Kedah's Ruler. He was elected as the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong by the Conference of Rulers. His proclamation was held on 14th December 2011. He was the first person to hold the position for the second time and it was recognized in the Malaysia Book of Records, recently. His installation will be held on 11th April 2012
