He started his early education at Sekolah Rendah Jalan Kuantan from 1963 to 1967 and received secondary education at St. John Institution from 1968 to 1970. He attended prepatory education at Leys School Cambridge until 1973.
Sultan Nazrin is well-known to have an impressive academic background. He is an alumnus of top universities in the world, Oxford and Harvard.
He holds Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) bachelor's degree from Worcestor College, Oxford. Additionally, pursued his Master's in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government in Harvard.
He is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.
Two weeks after his father's proclamation as the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin was appointed as the Raja Muda of Perak on 15 April 1984.
Following the late Sultan Azlan's appointment as the 9th Supreme Ruler of Malaysia from 1989 to 1994, he was appointed as the Regent of Perak.

Sultan Nazrin married Zara Salim Davidson at Istana Iskandariah, Bukit Chandan, on 17 May 2007. This was announced by the Comptroller of the Perak royal household, Raja Datuk Seri Mansur Raja Razman.
Sultan Nazrin and Zara have known each other for eight years.
A day after the solemnisation of their vows, there was a special proclamation ceremony to bestow Zara with the official title of Raja Puan Besar of Perak. Sultan Azlan Shah had consented to the proclamation of Sultan Nazrin’s bride Zara Salim Davidson as the Raja Puan Besar of Perak and the conferment of the Darjah Kerabat on her.
Sultan Azlan Shah conferred Darjah Kerabat on Tuanku Zara Salim in 2007.
The royal wedding reception took place on 19 May 2007.

Following the demise of the 34th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah on 28th May 2014, Sultan Nazrin Shah was proclaimed as the 35th Sultan of Perak on 29th May 2014.
Sultan Nazrin's was enthroned as the 35th Sultan of Perak was held on 6th May 2015 at Istana Iskandariah.
