Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah is the ninth Sultan of Selangor. He was crowned as the Ninth Sultan of Selangor on 8 March 2003 at Alam Shah Palace.
He ascended the throne on November 21, 2001 after his father, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah died in his office as Yang di-Pertuan Agong
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah was born as Tengku Idris Shah on December 24, 1945 at Jemaah Palace in Klang, Selangor and is the eldest son of 10 children of the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah and Raja Shaidatul Ihsan Tengku Badar Shah, his fellow Selangor royal (of part-Perak royal descent).

He received his early education at the Malay Primary School, Raja Muda Road, Kuala Lumpur and St. John's Institution from 1954 to 1959.
He continued his secondary education at Hale School in Perth, Australia in 1960 before proceeding to Britain to further his education at Langhurst College in Surrey in 1964.
On September 3, 1960 at the age of 15, he was appointed as the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Selangor.

His proclamation as the Raja Muda was held in 1970.
In 1968 after completing his studies, Sultan Sharafuddin held several posts in the Selangor State and Federal Civil Services.
He was attached to the Selangor State Secretariat, various District Offices and the Royal Malaysian Police Department in Kuala Lumpur.
On November 21, 2001, after the demise of his father Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Sultan Sharafuddin became the ninth Sultan of Selangor.
Prior to this, he was the Regent of Selangor, appointed in 1999, while his father served as Malaysia's 11th King or Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
Besides Tengku Amir, Sultan Sharafuddin has two daughters, Tengku Zerafina and Tengku Zatashah from his first marriage to his fellow Selangor royal Raja Zarina Raja Zainal.

Tengku Amir is from his second marriage to American businesswoman Lisa Davi, Cik Nurlisa Idris after she embraced Islam .
Both marriages ended in divorce.
Sultan Sharafuddin has a keen interest in art, and also loves reading, yachting, photography, stamp-collecting and antique-collecting.
He is the chairman of the Shah Alam Gallery and the Selangor Arts Foundation.
Sultan Sharafuddin is also a sports fan, and is the honorary life president of the Football Association of Selangor.
He also excels in sailing, vintage-car-driving and mountain-climbing.
He was awarded Commandeur de le Legion d'Honneur in 2012

In 1997, he participated in the Peking To Paris Challenge, a 16,000km vintage car race that took 43 days and covered 13 countries namely China, Mongolia, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and France. He received a Silver Medal.
He was awarded Commandeur de le Legion d'Honneur in 2012
